How to choose a creative agency for a premium brand

Choose the agency whose thinking you trust, not the one with the loudest reel. What we would look for if we were hiring an agency ourselves.

The short answer: choose the agency whose thinking you trust, not the one with the most impressive reel. A premium brand depends on restraint and consistency, and both come from process rather than portfolio. This is what we would look for if we were hiring an agency ourselves.

Read the portfolio properly

Every agency shows its best work. The question is whether each client still looks like itself. If every project shares the same typeface, the same layout and the same tone, you are buying the agency's style, not a brand of your own. Look for range, and for work that has aged well a few years after launch.

Ask how they begin

A good first conversation is mostly questions: who your customers are, what they pay, who you compete with, what you will not do. If an agency opens with moodboards before it understands your positioning, the visuals will be decoration. Strategy should come first, and it should be written down so you can hold everyone to it later.

Find out who does the work

Ask who you will actually speak to each week and who designs and builds the site. At a boutique studio the people who pitch are usually the people who work on your project. At a larger agency the senior team may hand over after the sale. Neither is wrong, but you should know which one you are buying.

Ask what happens after launch

A website is not finished on launch day. Ask how the agency measures whether it is working, what they look at in the first months, and how changes are handled. An agency that talks only about the reveal and never about performance is designing for its portfolio, not for your business.

Make sure you own what you pay for

You should own your domain, your site, your content and your accounts, and your team should be able to edit copy and images without calling anyone. Ask which platform they build on and why it suits you, not just them.

Understand the price

Premium work is priced by scope: strategy, identity, the number of templates, content, integrations and ongoing support. Ask for a clear scope, what is included, how revisions work and what counts as extra. A quote that is much lower than the others usually means something has been left out.

Red flags

  • No questions about your customers or pricing before a proposal.
  • Every project in the portfolio looks the same.
  • Vague answers about who does the work.
  • The agency keeps ownership of your site or accounts.
  • Guaranteed results, rankings or sales figures.

Questions to ask on the first call

  • What would you need to know about us before designing anything?
  • Which project in your portfolio is closest to ours, and what did you learn from it?
  • Who will I speak to every week?
  • How do you measure whether the work is working?
  • What happens if we want changes six months after launch?
